Short answer: to drive a tuk tuk or scooter in Sri Lanka you need three things: (1) your home-country driving licence, (2) a 1949-convention International Driving Permit (IDP) issued in your home country before you travel, and (3) a Sri Lankan permit that covers your IDP. We can arrange the Sri Lankan permit for you before you pick up your tuk tuk.
What changed in 2025?
Since April 2025, the Automobile Association of Ceylon no longer issues the local recognition permit on a national driving licence alone. You now need a valid 1949 International Driving Permit first. With your IDP, the Sri Lankan permit can be issued for up to 6 months.
No IDP means no self-drive. The Sri Lankan permit cannot be issued without it, so please get your IDP in your home country before you fly. Make sure it will not expire during your trip.
Which IDP do I need?
You need the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP, issued by the authorised body in your home country. If you are travelling from the UK, make sure your IDP is valid at least one week before your trip.
